What If Your Home Could Work Better for You?

For many of us, home is where we feel most comfortable, independent, and connected to the people and routines we love. As we age, however, everyday activities that once seemed simple can sometimes become more challenging.

What if the answer wasn’t moving somewhere else—but making your home work better for you?

That’s the idea behind CAPABLE, a person-centered approach designed to help older adults live safely and independently in their own homes.

What Is CAPABLE?

CAPABLE stands for Community Aging in Place—Advancing Better Living for Elders. The program takes a practical, individualized approach to helping older adults remain independent at home.

Rather than focusing only on a person’s limitations, CAPABLE starts with an important question:

What do you want to be able to do in your home?

From there, the focus is on identifying the barriers that may be making everyday activities difficult and finding solutions that support greater safety and independence.

Those solutions can be surprisingly simple. A small change to a home, a different way of approaching an everyday task, or the right adaptive equipment may make a meaningful difference.

Making Home Work for You

Every person and every home is different. That’s why CAPABLE is built around the individual—not a one-size-fits-all checklist.

For one person, the goal might be being able to safely prepare a meal. For another, it might be getting in and out of the shower more easily, moving around the home with greater confidence, or continuing to participate in favorite daily activities.

By addressing both the person and the environment, CAPABLE helps create practical solutions that support the things that matter most.

Independence Can Look Different for Everyone

Aging independently doesn’t necessarily mean doing everything without help. In fact, independence can mean having the right tools, resources, and support to continue doing the things you value.

That might mean making a few changes to your home. It might mean learning a new strategy for completing a daily activity. Or it might mean having professionals work with you to identify solutions that fit your goals and lifestyle.

The goal is to help older adults feel more confident and capable in their own homes.

Why Aging in Place Matters

Home is more than four walls. It’s where routines happen, memories are made, and relationships are nurtured.

For many older adults, being able to remain at home can provide a sense of familiarity, stability, and connection. Supporting people in their homes can also help preserve the routines and activities that contribute to a meaningful life.

CAPABLE offers a way to think differently about aging in place: Instead of asking whether someone’s home is still suitable for them, we can ask what can be changed so the home better supports the person living there?

That shift in perspective can open the door to new possibilities.

A Home That Supports You

Sometimes, creating greater independence doesn’t require a major change. It may simply take the right combination of support, creativity, and practical solutions.

CAPABLE is about meeting older adults where they are, listening to what matters to them, and finding ways to help them live more safely and independently at home.

Because everyone deserves the opportunity to feel safe, capable, and at home.

What if your home could work better for you? CAPABLE helps explore what’s possible.
